These compacts are being challenged by a coalition of labor unions and smaller, less wealthy tribes throughout California. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is one of four tribes who stand to benefit from the 2007 Tribal Gaming Compacts. The reservation has a land area of 127.083 km² (49.067 sq mi), with a resident population of 954, the majority of them of Native American heritage.
